Oga Sabinus: Whoever enters equity must do so with clean hands

We recently noticed a tweet about comedian Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, also known as Sabinus, slamming Friesland Foods Wamco Nigeria Plc with a one billion naira lawsuit for what he called improper use of his trademark ‘something hooge.’

Sabinus also sought N100 million from UAC Foods for “the use of his animated visage in an advertisement for the Gala sausage roll.”

If you watch a lot of comedy skits and films, you’re probably familiar with phrases like “70-year-old man,” “no be juju be that,” “you are a mumu man,” “they have left you behind,” “picture,” “na your mumu na him too much,” and “you be mumu, you think say you dey wise”!

You might ask where the comedians and humorous skit creators acquired those background sounds, but you’d be surprised to learn that they came from Asari Dokubo.

Patience Jonathan, the former first lady, also provided amusing background noises such as “na just you waka come,” “there is God ooo,” “you were not notified too,” and “continue.”

All Nigerian skit creators are doing it for the money, and they’re utilizing intellectual property like the background voices listed above without paying a kobo for them.

In his comedy videos, comedian Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, better known as Sabinus, used the voices of Asari Dokubo and Patience Jonathan as background sounds.

OPINION: I am not opposed to individuals suing corporations for unauthorized use of their intellectual property. However, anyone enters equity must do so with clean hands. You can’t sue other people for what you’ve done. Since he began profiting off Asari Dokubo and Patience Jonathan’s intellectual properties, how much has Sabinus given them?

Sabinus’ case can be argued in court if he doesn’t already know. The case of Asari Dokubo and Patience Jonathan, on the other hand, cannot be contested; it is theirs. So, just because Sabinus snapped a shot with his hands dangling, no one else has the right to draw or photograph in the same pose? What do you mean by “intellectual property”? Please tell me you’re joking.

Sabinus is, in my opinion, the best Nigerian comic right now. Before I’m being accused of hating him, I need to make it clear.
