On Sunday, July 31, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal broke three Commonwealth Games records to earn Nigeria’s second gold medal in a competition.
Rafiatu set a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 90 kg in the snatch category to win the women’s 59 kg weightlifting event.
The 25-year-old first lifted 110 kg, then lifted 115 kg to break the previous Games record, and then lifted 116 kg on his third attempt to achieve a new Commonwealth Games World Record. Tali Darsigny of Canada won bronze at 196 kg, while Jessica Gordon Brown of England took silver at 197 kg.

In the women’s 59kg weightlifting competition, a new Commonwealth Games record of 206kg was set.
Her triumph came just after Team Nigeria celebrated Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s bronze-medal win in the men’s 67kg weightlifting competition.
