Mauricio Pochettino explains substituting Lionel Messi at half-time in PSG win

Lionel Messi keeps on making a disappointing beginning to his PSG career

Lionel Messi was hauled off at half-time during Paris Saint-Germain‘s success over Lille on Friday night, but Mauricio Pochettino has clarified that it was a safety measure over a physical issue.

PSG were 1-0 down at the break and Messi was all the while searching for his first Ligue 1 goal since joining the French side when he was subbed.

Mauro Icardi supplanted his comrade at half-time and PSG proceeded to dominate the match 2-1 because of goals from Marquinhos and a late victor from Angel Di Maria.

The question focussed however on Messi after the contest and why the Argentine was substituted at half-time.

The manager uncovered a physical issue to the 34-year-old, and keeping in mind that he doesn’t think it is significant, there is no assurance at this stage.

‘We have to wait,’ said Pochettino. ‘We were with the doctors at half-time, it’s a precaution, he couldn’t continue. We hope that’s not a big deal.’

Mauricio Pochettino had to take Lionel Messi off at half-time

Messi has now played five Ligue 1 games without a goal, in spite of the fact that it has not actually hampered PSG as they sit 10 points clear at the highest point of the table.

In any case, it is the second time he has been taken off by Pochettino when the team was a goal behind, just for PSG to proceed to dominate the game.

The former Barcelona hotshot has got off the mark in the Champions League for his new club, indeed he has scored three goals in three games in Europe, it is simply locally he has battled to have the effect that was anticipated from him.
