Set aside around 1,000 USD a month for living expenses if a student happens to live in countries like Argentina, Chile, Brazil, or Uruguay. But even in these countries, some cities are even more pricey like Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
Fully-Funded Scholarships in South America for International Students
South American schools are cheaper than North American schools. If you manage to get a scholarship there, you can save even more in terms of educational expenses. Below, is a list of some of the best scholarships available in South America that you can apply to.
1. University of Buenos Aires Scholarships:
The scholarships at the University of Buenos Aires are reserved for students from China, Italy, and Mexico. Students from Italy and Mexico get to do specializations, study a master’s program, or get involved in a research program that cannot exceed more than six months. The recipients will get a monthly stipend and do not have to pay any tuition fees.
The benefits for Chinese students are more or less the same. They will be entitled to get enrolled in a Spanish language program and will get health insurance as well.
2. TWAS Scholarship Grants (Brazil):
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) along with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) is giving out scholarships to study a Ph.D. program in Brazil. The scholarships are for students from developing nations and allow recipients to study natural sciences.
Many Brazilian universities have partnered up for this scholarship which is offered for up to four years. The scholarship holders will get a monthly allowance for taking care of their living expenses which cannot be converted into any other currency.
3. Kleinhans Fellowships (Brazil):
This fellowship is in the area of forest management and preservation. This is very impactful research that will be implemented for increasing forestation. Students from all nationalities are welcome to apply. The award is worth 20 grand (USD) and is given for two years.
Students can use this amount for covering their living or educational expenses. This scholarship does not offer a tuition fee waiver. Applicants must possess a master’s in environmental sciences, ecology, botany, or any other related field.
4. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Scholarships:
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is giving out a number of scholarships (and teaching assistantships), some of which are discussed below:
The teaching assistantship allows Ph.D. students to get an exemption from paying the tuition fee. They also get a monthly stipend to pay off their living expenses.
Students who have gotten registered for all the credits in their Ph.D. program will get a full tuition fee waiver.
Another award offers health insurance to its recipients.
An educational fund is meant to sponsor workshops, seminars, and guest lectures for doctoral students. These events are organized for networking and learning purposes.
5. BRAS Scholarships:
International students who are interested in taking up a language course in Brazil or doing exploratory research can apply for this BRAS scholarship. It is offered by the BRASA institution in Brazil. It is sort of a travel grant. Applicants from the USA will be given preference.
