Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those unable to study in the UK for financial and other reasons.
The purpose of the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship in the UK is to contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals in key development areas.

Eligibility Criteria:
The university is responsible for ensuring its candidates meet the CSC’s eligibility criteria. To apply for these scholarships, candidates must:
- Be a citizen of, or be granted refugee status in, an eligible developing Commonwealth country (see overleaf), or be a British Protected Person;
- Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country (see overleaf);
- Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard. A lower qualification and sufficient relevant experience may be considered in certain cases;
- Be unable to afford to study the programme without this scholarship.
- Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships may not be held concurrently for more than one course.
- If selected for a scholarship, candidates must be residents and remain in an eligible developing Commonwealth country and must not undertake study towards any other qualification for the duration of their award.

Selection Process:
- Each participating UK university will conduct its own recruitment process to select a specified number of candidates for Distance Learning Scholarships. Universities must put forward their selected candidates to the CSC by 9 May 2023.
- The CSC will then confirm that these candidates meet the eligibility criteria for this scheme. Universities will inform candidates of their results by July 2023.
Selection criteria include:
- Academic merit of the candidate
- The potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country
How to Apply for Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship?
- You must apply to study an eligible Master’s course at a UK university that is participating in the Distance Learning scheme.
- You must also secure admission to your course in addition to applying for a Distance Learning Scholarship.
- You must check with your chosen university for their specific advice on when to apply, admission requirements, and rules for applying.
- You must make your application using the CSC’s online application system, in addition to any other application that you are required to complete by your chosen university.
- The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the online application system.
- You can apply for more than one course and/or to more than one university, but you may only accept one offer of a Distance Learning Scholarship.
- All applications must be submitted by 16.00 (GMT) on 28 March 2023 at the latest.
- Your application must include the following supporting documentation by 16:00 (GMT) on 28 March 2023 in order for your application to be eligible for consideration:
- Proof that the applicant is a citizen or has refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country: a copy of a valid passport (or national ID card) showing a photograph, date of birth, and country of citizenship
- Full transcripts detailing all higher education qualifications, including to-date transcripts for any courses currently being studied, with certified translations if not in English
- References from at least two individuals, on institutional letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details
- The CSC will not accept supporting documentation submitted outside the online application system.
- Supporting documentation uploaded to the online application system must be uploaded as files that are no more than 5 MB in size and must be in one of the following formats: PDF, .doc, .docx, .odt, .jpg, .jpeg. Files submitted in any other format (including Zip files and PDF Portfolios) will NOT be accepted.
- Applicants are responsible for seeking permission from their referees in advance of submitting their application; for ensuring that their referees are available to complete the reference by the deadline and have received the reference request email from the online application system.

All applications must be submitted by 16.00 (GMT) on 28th March 2023 at the latest. Your application must include all the supporting documentation by deadline in order for your application to be eligible for consideration.
